Sweet Dreams Boutique – Responsible Down Standards (RDS)
We at Sweet Dreams Boutique proudly offer down duvets and pillows from Daniadown—our main supplier—whose products are certified by the Responsible Down Standard (RDS). The RDS safeguards the welfare of geese and ducks that provide the down and feathers for the bedding products we all love.
Our Goals
The Responsible Down Standard ensures that down and feathers come from ducks and geese that have been treated well. This means enabling them to live healthy lives, express natural behaviors, and avoid pain, fear, or distress. The standard also follows the chain of custody from farm to product, so consumers can trust that the down and feathers they purchase are truly RDS certified.
What Is the RDS?
The Responsible Down Standard is an independent, voluntary global standard. Even though there may be no legislation requiring it, companies can still choose to certify their products to RDS. Developed and revised over three years with input from animal welfare groups, industry experts, brands, and retailers, the RDS recognizes best practices in animal welfare and excludes those that violate an animal’s well-being.
Key Points in the Standard
- No removal of down and feathers from live birds (no live-plucking or molt-harvesting).
- Force-feeding is strictly prohibited.
- The welfare of birds is respected at all times, from hatching to slaughter.
- RDS down and feathers are properly identified, preventing any mix-up with non-RDS products.
- The entire supply chain is audited by a professional, third-party certification body.
- Only products with 100% certified down and feathers carry the RDS logo.
When a Brand Chooses to Use the RDS
- The brand examines its supply chain to understand where its down comes from. Eventually, each step of the supply chain must be certified by an approved third-party called a Certification Body.
-
The certification process involves two steps:
- On-site audit: An inspector visits each facility (farm, factory, or other), does a visual inspection, checks documents and procedures, and interviews staff. These observations form the “audit report.”
- Certification decision: A certifier reviews the audit report. If all requirements are met, the facility is granted certification.
- On farms and in slaughterhouses (anywhere animals are present), the Certification Body examines animal welfare, ensuring no evidence of live plucking or force-feeding. All processes must align with RDS guidelines.
- At factories and manufacturers, the Certification Body checks that RDS materials (down, feathers, jackets, duvets, etc.) are properly tracked, labeled, and remain separate from non-certified products throughout production.
Daniadown's supply, manufacturing, and distribution operations have been certified to RDS by Control Union. Our RDS Certification Number is #841317.
